Hand Drawn Lettering

From pencil sketch to final vector format

For me the most traditional way of beginning a lettering project starts with good quality paper and sharp pencils. There is something about graphite drawing that really brings out the character and line quality of you project. Once I have a good feel about the style of the letters, I will either scan or photograph the drawing and transfer it to the computer.

The hand drawn sketch is placed in Adobe Illustrator where the letter shapes are drawn as vector shapes. Once my lettering is in vector format I can easily add more elements and style to each letter.

At this point I’ve gone ahead and started experimenting with layering and colours.
